About Russell Betts
A career of public service and business.
Russell Betts grew up in Southern California living in the same neighborhood until leaving for Humboldt State University where he studied journalism in the early 1980’s.
Out of college, Russ joined a small manufacturing business that later developed a unique new product. The company grew quickly. Russ organized production through rapid sales growth that reached $12
million annual sales. The company sent Russ to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he set up a new manufacturing facility.
Building on that success he was promoted to serve as Director of Operations for all US manufacturing and distribution. After fourteen years, a new position welcomed Russ with a new company. He joined a Chicago company with worldwide operations. That position led him overseas as general manager. What was to be a one year assignment lasted seven.
Russ became deeply involved in the American overseas community. He accepted a position as Consulate Warden for the U.S. State Department, a position that provided emergency and other assistance to Americans living overseas. Russ met his wife Meina. They dated for three years and then started the process to come to the United States. Meina became an American Citizen and has proudly voted in every election since.
In 2002, Russ and his wife moved to Desert Hot Springs. Together they opened a salon in town. They enjoy a successful business now celebrating 18 years in Desert Hot Springs. For four terms in office, Russ has served our community well, from fighting the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to keep it from putting high voltage power towers on top of the hills behind our city to the several July 5 fireworks and concert and festivals that Russ and his team made happen with private donations.
Russ has always kept a watchful eye on government spending and sounded early warnings that serious financial trouble was ahead. When financial crisis hit as Russ predicted he did not say I told you so.
He worked with his fellow council members to solve the financial problem. Russ has gained a reputation as a thoughtful, steady voice on our city council. Like many of us, Russ sees a city with great potential but one that is not living up to its potential.
By following fundamentals, ending cronyism and favoritism in city contracting, Russ believes we will make great strides toward our goals. With his extensive business experience, his detailed knowledge of city affairs and extensive regional government service on behalf of our city, Russ serves our city well and with the courage to cast difficult votes. Russ has the temperament to steady our city council and the tenacity to fight for our resident’s interests.
